Airsoft Gun Found in Student’s Backpack in West Frankfort

WEST FRANKFORT – An incident involving a student with an airsoft gun happened Friday morning at Denning Elementary School in West Frankfort.

According to Frankfort Community Unit School District #168 Superintendent Matt Donkin, shortly after school began Friday, administration at Denning Elementary School was notified that a student might have left an airsoft gun in their backpack.

School personnel, with the assistance of the Student Resource Officer from the West Frankfort Police Department, quickly investigated and confiscated the weapon with no further issue. The school followed its student disciplinary procedures for the student involved. There was no threat towards any student or staff during this incident.

Everyone is reminded that weapons or look-alike weapons are not to be brought on to school property. The school district continues to be alert to any issue that may affect student and staff safety and reminds everyone that if you see something, say something, and report it.

In addition, Denning Elementary School was cleared briefly Friday morning after a food item burned in a microwave oven, causing smoke in the kitchen area. Students and staff did a good job of following their training according to Donkin.
