CARBONDALE – A Pinckneyville man has been arrested for impersonating a Carbondale Police officer.
According to Carbondale Police, 55-year-old Mark A. Crawford was located in rural Jackson County with the assistance of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday. Crawford was arrested without incident and charged with Impersonating a Public Official and Disorderly Conduct. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail.
Carbondale Police were able to identify Crawford as the suspect after investigating a report Tuesday where a resident confronted Crawford standing on their porch in the 400 block of West Main Street. Crawford told the resident he was a Carbondale Police officer.
Without further explanation, Crawford turned and walked away, saying he was calling for backup. He left the area in a dark-colored Jeep Cherokee that had lights on the top of the vehicle. He was wearing blue pants, a blue collared shirt, and a vest.
Carbondale Police say they didn’t have any officers in that area when the incident was reported. They did not identify any other agencies reporting officers in that area. Police say this was the only incident involving the possible impersonation of a Carbondale police officer that had been reported.
