Jefferson County Collects Most Pounds of Food in Food Drive

MOUNT VERNON (WMIX) – The State of Illinois has informed Jefferson County organizers they collected the most pounds in the state of non-perishable food in the Serve Illinois Fight Food Insecurity Challenge.

IDHS-Serve Illinois will be visiting Mt. Vernon next week to recognize volunteers with the Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Certificate of Appreciation.

This certificate is one of the highest honors an Illinois resident can receive in regard to volunteerism. It holds the signature of Governor J.B. Pritzker, IDHS Secretary Designate Dulce Quintero, and Serve Illinois Chair Natalie Furlett.

The agency will also be recognizing numerous volunteers for the countless hours and work in gathering the 9,000 pounds of food donated and gathered. That’s four and a half tons of food donated and gathered in Jefferson County.

But as donations were brought in from other collection locations across the county, organizers are now reporting people in Jefferson County gave 4.5 tons of food.

That’s 9,000 pounds of food that will be shared between Angels on Assignment, Rescue Mission, Epworth United Methodist Church and Faith Lutheran to be distributed to people in need right here in Jefferson County.
