Carbondale Police Continue to Investigate Reports of Motor Vehicle Theft

CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police say since early last month, they have investigated several reports of motor vehicle thefts and attempted motor vehicle thefts.

The manufacturers of the targeted vehicles include Kia, Hyundai and Dodge, specifically the Dodge Challenger. Most of the stolen vehicle cases involve the Kia and Hyundai models between the years of 2011 and 2022.

The Kia and Hyundai manufactured vehicles can be started by manipulation if the vehicle lacks an engine immobilizer. An engine immobilizer is a common anti-theft feature that prevents the engine from starting unless the vehicle’s key is nearby. This is a trend seen across the country. The investigations into these stolen vehicles are active and ongoing.

If your vehicle is stolen, please report your stolen vehicle to the Carbondale Police Department at 618-549-2121 as soon as possible.
