MT. VERNON (WMIX) – One injury was reported Friday in two crashes that closed Interstate 64 for hours and backed up traffic on connecting roadways, as well.
Just before 12:30 Friday afternoon, the first crash reportedly happened when one semi ran under the trailer of another semi that had slowed for traffic ahead.
The impact forced the second semi into a car in front of it. Occupants in those vehicles reportedly suffered minor injuries and declined medical attention.
Jefferson Fire responded to assist with cleanup of oil and fuel spilled at the scene. Emergency personnel responded when the occupant of a vehicle stopped in traffic began running low on oxygen.
The two semis reportedly blocked the roadway resulting in the eastbound lanes to be closed until they were removed.
The crash closed the eastbound lanes from U.S. 51 at Richview to Mt. Vernon for three and a half hours.
About an hour into that closure, a car and a semi collided in the westbound lanes four miles west of Woodlawn. One minor injury was reported in that crash.
