MURPHYSBORO – The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reports that threats made to three schools in our area turned out to be false.
The sheriff’s office responded at 7 a.m. Sunday to a call of a threat to a Jackson County school. The threat was made via Facebook posts to the school’s Facebook page. The sheriff’s office did not name the school in their press release.
During the course of the investigation, it was learned the same Facebook profile made similar threats to at least two other schools, one being within the city limits of Carbondale and one being within the city limits of Vienna.
A thorough investigation was conducted, and it was determined the threat was not credible. It was determined the Facebook posts originated from outside the country. An investigation into the origins of the Facebook profile is ongoing.
This investigation was conducted with the assistance of the Vienna Police Department as well as the Carbondale Police Department in collaboration with school officials and the Jackson County State’s Attorney Office.
