Deputies Find Cannabis, Fentanyl at Recent Traffic Stop in Williamson County, Driver Cited

MARION – A man was recently cited for possessing cannabis and fentanyl after he was stopped for committing several traffic violations on eastbound Illinois 13 in Williamson County.

Williamson County Sheriff’s deputies stopped Isaiah B. Butler in a parking lot around 1:10 a.m. on Friday, July 12.

When deputies approached Butler, they noticed his speech was impaired, his body was shaking, and he tried to hand them a credit card rather than his Illinois driver’s license.

Deputies asked Butler to get out of his vehicle. He got out and deputies saw a green leafy substance, which was suspected to be cannabis, in the front passenger seat.

A probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted. While conducting the search, assisting deputies spoke with Butler. These deputies knew Butler from prior law enforcement contact and knew him to often conceal controlled substances on his person.

During the conversation, Butler told deputies that he had some pills in his underwear.

Butler was allowed to retrieve the pills, which he dropped on the ground as instructed.

Butler was read the Miranda Warning, and then asked what the pills were to which he responded “M30’s.”

He clarified that the pills were fentanyl which they subsequently field tested positive for.

Butler was cited for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Adult Use Cannabis in a Motor Vehicle, and Improper Lane Usage.

Butler was taken to the Williamson County Jail.
