BROOKPORT – A dramatic manhunt and chase unfolded in Massac County early this morning, with deputies pursuing a suspect through Brookport and across the bridge into Kentucky.
According to our sister station, WMOK, in Metropolis, the incident began before 6 a.m. when the Massac County Sheriff’s office received a call about a home invasion on U.S. 45 South and 911 College Station. The suspect, reportedly armed with two knives, had broken into the home and was causing destruction. Deputies responded quickly, calling in a tracking dog to assist in the search.
By 6:42 a.m., deputies had located the suspect’s shoes – last spotting him in the 7000 block of U.S. 45 South heading towards Brookport.
Shortly after 7 a.m., the suspect commandeered a vehicle and crossed the bridge into Kentucky, with McCracken County authorities notified and in pursuit.
The incident came to an end when the vehicle stopped at the Smoke Shop on the other side of the Brookport Bridge. It is unclear whether the driver voluntarily pulled over or was forced to do so.
We hope to have more details when they are made available.
