MCLEANSBORO – The City of McLeansboro is warning residents about a scam where residents are being notified of a utility rate hike of 20 percent.
City officials say residents need to keep in mind that this percentage can change with every call. Do not fall for this scam. Do not provide the scammer with any personal, bank, or credit card information. The city’s utility rate multipliers are set by city ordinance and is reviewed annually.
Notifications of any changes to this multiplier are sent with your utility bill before the new rates take effect. The city can’t change the rate multiplier without following this process.
The city will not call you, nor have another company call you, to provide notice of rate changes. Please report any suspected fraudulent phone calls you receive from people impersonating the city. Call McLeansboro City Hall at 618-643-2723 should you have any questions or concerns.
