CARBONDALE – A Carbondale man has been charged with two counts of First-degree Murder in the March death of his mother.
Carbondale Police say on March 19, officers responded to the 100 block of South Hewitt regarding an elderly woman who was not responsive. Police and other emergency medical responders tried to save 85-year-old Shelby Winfield’s life, but were not successful.
Police and detectives, with help from the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, continued to investigate the circumstances leading to Winfield’s death for several months.
As a result of that investigation, a Jackson County arrest warrant was issued Friday for 65-year-old William L. Walters on the murder charge.
Police found Walters in the 100 block of North Tower Road and arrested him on the warrant without incident. He is lodged in the Jackson County Jail.
Online court records show a preliminary hearing for Walters is set for Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 1:15 p.m. in Jackson County Court.
