Former Carterville Police Chief to Become WCSO Detective Monday

MARION – Former Carterville Police Chief Michael Flaningam has a new job.

Flaningam is going to work as a detective with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office starting Monday according to Sheriff Jeff Diederich.

Flaningam’s contract as Police Chief was recently not renewed. It ended Jan. 1. He became Carterville’s Police Chief in October of 2018.

The sheriff says the opportunity to bring Flaningam’s skills to the sheriff’s office has been several years in the making and will help strengthen the investigative resources of Williamson County which has seen a reduction in strength resulting from the retirement of many seasoned investigators over the past several years. He will provide guidance and share his depth of experience to assist the unit in recruiting and developing the next generation of investigators who will serve Williamson County.

Flaningam brings significant experience to the organization which includes 31 years of law enforcement experience. He has previously served as a field training officer, firearms instructor, and lead homicide investigator. He has over 13 years experience as an investigator.

Prior to his tenure as Carterville Police Chief, Flaningam served the Village of South Elgin Police Department for 22 years, having served as Supervisor of Investigations.
