SPRINGFIELD – After a deadly storm in 2021, a state task force recommends warehouses should be required to have tornado shelters.
Capitol News Illinois reports the warehouse safety task force says building codes should be updated and other safety measures should be implemented.
The task force was established after six people died when a tornado struck an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville in December 2021. Edwardsville police said at the time the victims were in a severely damaged part of the building.
The E-F-3 tornado hit the warehouse with 150 mile-per-hour winds.
Illinois had a record 142 tornadoes in 2024, according to the National Weather Service.
