MARION – Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich reminds residents to be extra cautious near icy bodies of water.
The county has a significant number of lakes, streams and ponds that are potentially dangerous during the winter months.
It is important for residents, especially parents, to stay vigilant during low temperatures to ensure that children are not attempting to walk on thin ice.
The sheriff says ice in Williamson County rarely freezes sufficiently to safely bear weight. Please stay off all frozen surfaces.
While the county experiences a limited amount of annual freezing and frozen waterways, our warmer winter temperatures often contribute to unstable ice and lure children to explore its presence.
You should be vigilant and report emergencies by call 911.
If you see unsafe activity, including children playing on ice, call the sheriff’s office at 618-997-6541.
The county’s first priority is to avoid an accident before it happens.
