CARBONDALE – SIH remains steadfast in its mission to improve the health and well-being of all people in the communities we serve. In light of recent developments regarding Heartland Women’s Healthcare, SIH assures the community the Birthing Center at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale will continue to provide labor and delivery services with the highest standard of care.
On Dec. 4, 2024, Heartland Women’s Healthcare notified SIH of their intent to discontinue labor and delivery services on Jan. 31, 2025, citing their decision aligned with the practice’s “strategic goals and operational plans.”
SIH recognizes the difficulties this situation presents to growing families. We remain steadfast in our commitment to provide comprehensive care at the Birthing Center where skilled obstetricians, midwives, advanced practice providers, registered nurses and staff are prepared to meet the need. We extend our gratitude to Southern Illinois Ob-Gyn Associates and Shawnee Health for their invaluable collaboration in addressing these challenges. To ensure high-quality care, SIH recently partnered with OBHG to establish an inpatient obstetrician hospitalist program. Fully staffed this spring, the program will provide an in-house obstetrician for 24/7 emergency services and support, alleviating the demands on current OBs and midwives while enhancing care for expectant families.
“Our priority is, and always will be, the health and well-being of our patients,” said SIH Director of Women and Children’s Services Terri Pursell. “The Birthing Center will remain a place of safe, compassionate care for every stage of pregnancy.”
SIH is committed to transparency and communication as we navigate this transition. We encourage patients with any questions or concerns to reach out to the Birthing Center at 618.549.0721 extension 65200. Meanwhile, patients impacted by Heartland Women’s decision are encouraged to call their provider’s office for clarity and guidance on delivery options.
