Johnson County Cracking Down on Semis Parking, Dumping Garbage on Interstate

VIENNA – In an effort to stop truckers from making garbage dumps on interstate ramps in Johnson County, the sheriff’s office will enforce the no parking on the interstate laws starting Saturday, March 29.

Officials say if a driver refuses to move, they will get a ticket and will be towed at their expense.

Volunteers are being asked to help the sheriff’s office pick up garbage on the side of the interstate ramps at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 29. Garbage bags, latex gloves and traffic control will be supplied.

The sheriff’s office says they have to take a stand about this issue for public health reasons. They say prison inmates can be used anymore to pick up garbage and ISP doesn’t have the manpower to enforce no parking on the interstates. Besides garbage being found, urine bottles, hypodermic needles and bags of feces have been dumped on the roadways.

The sheriff’s office will be making a request to IDOT to put up “No Parking” signs on the ramps. This has already happened in Metropolis.
