IDOT Seen Cleaning Garbage Off Interstate Ramps in Johnson County after Sheriff’s Office Complains

VIENNA – It seems IDOT got word about the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office’s plan to clean up the interstate ramps in the county.

The sheriff’s office posted a picture of IDOT crews cleaning garbage off the ramps Friday morning on its Facebook page.

Therefore, the clean-up day scheduled for Saturday, March 29 has been cancelled.

Earlier this week, the sheriff’s office said it was going to enforce the no parking on the interstate laws because truckers had turned the ramps into garbage dumps. Garbage along with urine bottles, hypodermic needles and large bags of feces have been found dumped on the roadways.

Officials said if a driver refused to move, they would get a ticket and be towed at their own expense.

The sheriff’s office also said they had to take a stand about this issue for public health reasons. They said prison inmates can’t be used any more to pick up garbage and Illinois State Police didn’t have enough manpower to enforce no parking on the interstates.

A request was also going to be made to IDOT to put up “No Parking” signs on the ramps.
