METROPOLIS – Metropolis Police took a 17-year-old juvenile into custody Saturday charging him with Reckless Driving, Failure to Yield to an Authorized Emergency Vehicle and Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding.
Police say as they and Massac County Sheriff’s deputies were on their way to Brookport to help an officer there, they saw a pickup truck pull in front of a Metropolis officer from the I-24 ramp to U.S. 45.
At first the truck appeared to yield, then sharply accelerated and cut in front of the squad, reaching speeds in excess of 105 mph in the rain. The truck at one point lost control, drove off the roadway and then into oncoming lanes. The vehicle continued toward Brookport with the officers still behind him.
In the meantime, the Brookport incident was secured. The truck ended up crashing in Brookport.
The juvenile was released to his mother on a notice to appear.
