Carbondale Man Found Guilty in April 2023 Murder of Rayshaun L. Simon

MURPHYSBORO – A Jackson County jury Friday found a Carbondale man guilty of Murder and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm following a five-day trial.

The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s office says 39-year-old Dewayne E. Jones Jr. faces a sentence between 45  years and natural life in prison for the murder of Rayshaun L. Simon in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane in Carbondale on April 28, 2023. Online court records show he will be sentenced on July 17 in Jackson County Court.

Carbondale Police responded to the scene and found Simon who had sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police performed life-saving measures until he was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale where he died.

The investigation was led by the Carbondale Police Department and assisted by the Southern Illinois University Department of Public Safety.
