MURPHYSBORO – Jackson County State’s Attorney Joseph A. Cervantez announced Monday that the State’s Attorney’s office is providing gun locks to promote community safety. Cervantez is leading the southern Illinois region in this work to encourage all families to secure guns separately from securing ammunition.
Gun violence is the number one cause of death for children in the United States. Approximately 4.6 million children live in homes where guns are not secured. Safe storage can lower the risk for unintentional shootings by children and curb suicide attempts. Proper storage also lowers the number of guns stolen from homes and vehicles.
The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office purchased over 1,000 cable, gun locks through the Illinois State Police Asset Forfeiture Fund.
Upon request, the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office will provide gun locks to local community groups and organizations to distribute at various events.
