Carbondale Teen Arrested for Motor Vehicle Theft, Gun Charge

CARBONDALE – A 15-year-old boy was caught with a loaded gun after leading Carbondale Police on a brief foot chase after officers arrived to investigate a report of a stolen vehicle early Monday morning.

Police responded to the 600 block of West Baird Street about the stolen vehicle around 12:40 a.m. They found it in the 500 block of East Main Street using license plate reader technology in the city.

Several juveniles fled from the vehicle once officers approached it in the 400 block of East Main Street. The boy caught with the loaded gun was arrested for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Motor Vehicle Theft, and Resisting a Peace Officer.

Officers checked with the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office to see if the boy met the criteria for incarceration in a juvenile detention facility pending court. Several facilities were contacted but none were able to house him, so he was turned over to a parent.
