CARBONDALE – SI CABE (Southern Illinois Culture and Art in Bilingual Education), in collaboration with The Varsity Center, Carbondale Public Library, and the City of Carbondale, proudly invites the community to honor the rich cultural heritage of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) from Oct. 26 through Nov. 2.
Día de los Muertos is a vibrant Mexican holiday where families celebrate and remember their deceased loved ones, reinforcing that love transcends death. This year, SI CABE hosts a community altar at The Varsity Center, located at 418 S. Illinois Ave. Community members are encouraged to submit the name and image of a loved one they wish to recognize at the altar. To submit names or learn more about the Día de los Muertos Art Showcase, please email SI CABE Executive Director Yahaira Vargas at soilcabe@gmail.com.
In the lead-up to this celebration, residents can participate in events that highlight Hispanic/Latinx Heritage at the Carbondale Public Library. On Thursday, Oct. 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., guest presenter Michelle Soto shares insights into Día de los Muertos traditions. Participants will have the chance to decorate sugar skulls, create Mexican paper flowers, and enjoy traditional treats.
These engaging programs are made possible through a partnership among SI CABE, Carbondale Public Library, and the City of Carbondale, and are free and open to the public. For a full list of upcoming events at the Carbondale Public Library, visit carbondalepubliclibrary.org.
