Early Morning House Fire in Mt. Vernon Claims Resident’s Life

MT. VERNON – One person is dead following an early Tuesday morning house fire in Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Chris Yenne says firefighters responded just after 3:30 a.m. after a Mt. Vernon Police officer found the fire in the 2800 block of Mannen Street. Fire could be seen on the back porch with flames inside.

Firefighters began battling the blaze and a search crew went inside where they found a resident within 10 feet of the front door. The resident was removed and life-saving efforts began immediately with assistance from Mt. Vernon Police.

The resident was taken to Deaconess Crossroads Hospital where they later died from their injuries. No name was released.

Fire crews from Kell, Webber, Jefferson Fire, Wayne City and Centralia assisted Mt. Vernon firefighters along with Mt. Vernon Police, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and MABAS Division 47 dispatchers.
