Ameren Illinois Alerting Customers about Ice Storm Power Scam

COLLINSVILLE – Several small business owners and a local sheriff in southern Illinois have alerted Ameren Illinois that scam artists are trying to prey on customers who were without power after the Jan. 5 ice storm.

Brian Bretsch, Public and Media Relations Manager with Ameren, says the scammers are using their normal threats of shutting off electric service if an immediate payment isn’t made within 60 to 90 minutes.

It is unfortunate that these individuals seem to swoop in at a time when customers are relieved to have their power restored only to have a scam artist attempt to dupe them out of money with a threat of disconnection.

Ameren is asking that if you receive a call demanding an immediate payment, ask for a call back number. Once you have received the call back number, please call Ameren Illinois at 1-800-755-5000 or Ameren Missouri at 1-800-552-7583.
