After deputies arrived, they discovered the victim had escaped and was waiting outside. Berry was still inside. He prevented the victim from leaving by slicing her car tires on two vehicles with the knife.
Berry had an outstanding arrest warrant for dangerous drugs. Deputies informed him several times he was under arrest and to come out of the home. He refused telling deputies they would have to get a search warrant.
Berry walked out and surrendered to deputies around 8:20 a.m. Then an hour or so later, deputies carried out a search warrant at the home and recovered the knife used in the incident along with other relevant evidence.
