CARTERVILLE – A Murphysboro man died in a fatal motorcycle crash just after 3 Friday afternoon in the area of Illinois 13 and Division Street in Carterville.
The Carterville Police Department says when police arrived, they discovered the crash involved a motorcycle with a single operator. Units on scene began life saving measures in an attempt to help the injured operator. Once EMS arrived on scene, the operator of the motorcycle was pronounced dead. He was identified as 27-year-old Damian O’Neal of Murphysboro.
After further investigation it was determined that the motorcycle was traveling at an unsafe speed with wet road conditions causing O’Neal to lose control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle and O’Neal turned over and O’Neal was ejected 150 yards from the initial crash location.
Eastbound Illinois 13 from Division Street to Wolf Creek Road was shut down for three hours while officers investigated the crash scene.
