ELIZABETHTOWN – Law enforcement in Hardin County is investigating the attempted theft of an ATM from an Elizabethtown bank.
The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office says around 2:25 a.m. Thursday, a 911 call came in stating that a white Ford F150 pickup and a black SUV with a chrome roof rack and wheels were attempting to steal an ATM from Banterra Bank in Elizabethtown. The attempt was not successful; however, the machine was heavily damaged. Deputies arrived on scene a few minutes later, secured the area and requested crime scene.
Later that morning, the pickup which had been stolen from Johnson County was recovered in a vacant lot on Walnut Street in Elizabethtown. Illinois State Police Crime Scene arrived hours later to process evidence found at both locations.
It is believed that these same individuals made unsuccessful attempts to steal ATMs from Johnson and Saline counties just hours before the attempt in Elizabethtown.
