Carbondale Police Seeking Suspect in Fatal Traffic Crash Involving Pedestrian

CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police are looking for a man involved in a traffic crash that killed a pedestrian just before 11 Friday night at intersection of East Walnut Street and Wall Street.

According to Carbondale Police, the suspect vehicle – a 2001 silver Mercury Grand Marquis with Illinois registration – was found on fire at 4:45 Saturday afternoon in the 1300 block of East Pleasant Hill Road. The Carbondale Township Fire Department extinguished the fire. Arson is suspected of being the cause of the fire. City of Carbondale Fire Department arson investigators responded to the scene to help. 

During the investigation, 36-year-old Jeremy L. Shered, of Carbondale, was identified as the driver of the vehicle when it struck the pedestrian, identified as 68-year-old Michael D. Welling of Carbondale, and fled the scene. Welling lost his life in this crash. His family was notified.

Probable cause exists for Shered’s arrest and law enforcement is searching for him. Area law enforcement agencies were notified, and the information was presented to the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office for an arrest warrant for Shered for Failure to Report a Traffic Crash Involving Death or Serious Injury and Driving While License Revoked.
